I slept really well and woke up to the incredible views of our apartment. Pilar, Steffania (our lovely studio and housemate) and I walked over to the studio together and had breakfast at Cafe Nice – a great little old cafeteria right under the studio.
Our studio is a very large open space on the top floor of the Centro de Arte Contemporânea e Fotografia, a former bank building located in the center of Belo Horizonte. The architectural dynamic of this building as a cultural center reminds me of Jamaica Center for Arts & Learning (JCAL) with its facade and location among all the hustle and bustle of a main commercial street.
I’m enamored with the space here, the light (so crisp and bright, the colors so vivid) the architecture (lots of art deco – beautiful details yet very functional) and the overall feeling.
The internet signal is slow so I need to remember to exercise patience. And this is where multi-tasking can prove to be a great method. Do some writing, make some drawings, export/process some images/video etc…
I’m already feeling spoiled by this experience of being here at this residency, having such a big, beautiful open space in which to work and all of this amazing uninterrupted time. I am incredibly blessed and fortunate to be here right now. What an unrepeatable experience. I feel like I’m living really hard at the moment – making the most of each day!
These are some details of the windows in the studio:
